In a few weeks, the dice will be cast. But while we wait for its official presentation, iOS 18 continues to be the subject of numerous rumors regarding its AI integration.
If it is not an invitation to its WWDC 2024 event, which will take place from June 10 to 14, 2024, Apple remains very mysterious about what awaits iOS users in the future. We know that iOS 18 will be presented during a keynote alongside Tim Cook, and it is logically expected to include elements related to artificial intelligence, but that’s about all.
A locally managed AI for the iPhone
To gather additional hints, we must turn to usual informants, like Mark Gurman, who explains that iOS 18 will benefit from local management of artificial intelligence. A surprising news but it also has its advantages, as it would require no internet connection to be used.
If Apple indeed has its own language model in the works, it would have fallen sufficiently behind for Bloomberg to explain in March that the company had approached Google to include Gemini in iOS, as a last resort.
However, it remains to be seen how Apple will run this AI locally, since these features require a lot of power. Google had explained that 8GB of RAM was not sufficient for the artificial intelligence to run properly, and that rather 12GB was needed. The iPhone 15, however, only has 6GB, while the iPhone 15 Pro has 8GB.
This solution of offering everything locally could therefore initially rely on the new chip present in the upcoming iPhones, especially the Pro models. Mark Gurman also explains that Apple does not aim to run everything offline and could extend the future AI capabilities to the cloud in the months following the release of iOS 18, theoretically scheduled for September 2024.
The wait for Apple’s artificial intelligence
Apple is expected to make a significant move regarding artificial intelligence. In the face of Google and Samsung, who have opened the floodgates for several months now, investors are waiting with some impatience to see what the American company will include in its upcoming iPhones, which design could benefit from a slight facelift.
